Why Use a Garden Lawn Roller To Roll Your Lawn?
One of the main maintenance secrets of lawn care professionals is lawn rolling, both when putting in a new lawn and for keeping an existing one looking good.
Lawn rollers are simple tools consisting of just a cylindrical drum and a bar for attaching to a tractor or mower or that includes a handle for manual use. The hollow drum is usually filled to increase the weight for quicker and easier leveling. Water is popular because of how easy it is to empty out afterward, but sand and soil are also good options. Rollers vary in size (2-6 feet long with cylinder diameters from 18-24 inches), weight (200 to over 1000 pounds when filled) and price ($100-$500). They can be rented by the day for around $20 or by the week for about $60.
A garden lawn roller is essential when putting in a new lawn. First, it smooths and evens out the ground so the water drains correctly and the lawn will be flat. After putting in the sod or grass seed, rolling a second time ensures that the grass roots or seeds are pushed well into the ground, promoting good root growth and quicker germination. The grass will be more firmly established sooner and stay healthier when it is rolled. Roll before and after when replacing patches of damaged lawn with new sod or reseeding. The same benefits apply and the new area can be smoothed in to match the surrounding lawn.
Existing lawns can be rolled periodically to help them return to their original flat and even state. Rodents can cause bumps or holes and many lawns suffer from frost-heaving, where the ground contracts and expands as it freezes and thaws, leaving uneven areas. Either the specific uneven bumps or depressions can be smoothed out or the entire lawn can be rolled even again.
Water can accumulate in just a few spots of a lawn, leading to poor drainage and grass health as well as providing an opportune environment for pests and lawn diseases. Lawn rolling will improve those water drainage issues so the entire lawn has the water it needs with the rest flowing away.
A smooth lawn is easier to mow and will look more symmetrically cut. Level ground is needed to get that crisp, professionally maintained look. Periodic rolling will get the lawn back to the way it should be and looking like a million bucks again.
