I saw Sandy on the beach,
sitting teary eyed and solemn,
a tap on her shoulder did not
startle her, she would not turn
to look at me, she sat and stared
out to sea, at the horizon.
The words I spoke were buffeted,
wild-blown down and muffled,
they could have been a cry for help,
a prayer for peace, anything.
Indifferent to the shadows cast,
long in the waning daylight, I swayed
between her and the sun, watching
the outline of me darken her back,
taping out a code in the gloom.

This certainly paints a nice clear snapshot, but I’m sorry to say,
the last line leaves *me* without understanding.
